HOW TO USE STRUCTURE “NÀO…ẤY/NẤY” IN VIETNAMESE

This grammar has two uses:

1. Combined pronoun used to links two phrases or two clauses that have a necessary correlative meaning.

Nào + Phrase/ clause + ấy/ nấy

Example:

• Em thích món nào thì chọn món ấy. (If you like something, choose it.)
• Hỏi câu nào thì trả lời câu ấy. (If asked a question, answer that question.)
• Anh thích vị nào thì mua kem vị ấy. (If you like any flavor, buy that flavor ice cream.)

2. Links two nouns that express two different things but have a necessary correclative meaning.

Nào + noun +ấy/ nấy

Example:

• Người nào việc nấy. (Everyone does their job.)
• Cha nào con nấy. (Like father Like son.)
• Mùa nào thức ấy. (Each season has delicious food of that season.)
• Tiền nào của nấy. (You get what you pay for)

Note:

If two parts of a sentence are clauses, there are some uses as follows:

Verb 1/ Clause 1 + gì (thì) + Verb 2/ Clause 2 + nấy

Verb 1/ Clause 1 + ai (thì) + Verb 2/ Clause 2 + người nấy

Verb 1/ Clause 1 + đâu (thì) + Verb 2/ Clause 2 + đấy

Verb 1/ Clause 1 + thế nào (thì) + Verb 2/ Clause 2 + thế ấy

Verb 1/ Clause 1 + bao nhiêu (thì) + Verb 2/ Clause 2 + bấy nhiêu

Example:

• Anh nói gì tôi nghe nấy. (I listen to whatever you say.)
• Chị cho gì thì thôi lấy nấy. (Whatever you give me, I will take it.)
• Có gì thì ăn nấy. (Eat whatever you have.)
• Anh giới thiệu ai thì tôi chọn người ấy. (Whoever you introduce, I will choose that person.)
• Em đi đâu thì anh đi đấy. (Wherever you go, I will go.)
• Con cần bao nhiêu thì mẹ sẽ cho con bấy nhiêu. (As much as you need, I will give you as much as you need.)
• Sếp chỉ đạo thế nào thì nhân viên phải thực hiện thế ấy. (Whatever the boss instructs, the employees must follow.)
