Reviewing The Kings Avatar, the Anime

I wanted to see this for a while now. The premise was very interesting and once I have nothing to do and nothing to watch, I started on this. I watched all of season 1, the OVAs and I'm almost finished with season 2.

First, NO SPOILERS!

The Style: I didn't mind the CGI animation mix. This is the first time I've ever seen chinese animation (apart from Neja the demon kid) and although I'm not very used it it, it works. It's got it's own style which is infinitely better than copying anime (which it still do to an extent tho). However, I had a slight issue with everyone looking like they walked right out of a kpop group.

They're average everyday people, they're gamers yet they all look flawless and perfect. One of them even has a little vampire tooth thing. I hated that guy, it looks too forced cute and I was forced to look away every time he was on screen (his personality was childish and insufferable too).

There should be a divide between regular people and their in game avatars. As a gamer myself, its really hard to connect with anyone when everyone looks thin as a model.

The Story: The story was fine. I enjoyed most of it but it was weird, I had a hard time following it. I constantly forget who someone was (and this only happened to me once when I was reading Tokyo Ghoul the second part). I had to check to see why Ye Xiu was fired so unceremoniously. It was a bit fast. I still cant remember most of their names. I wouldnt call it a masterpiece by any means but as a causal show it was doable.

I do however, find the lack of any explanation of how the game works to be very annoying. Is it so hard to introduce the game and its mechanisms at the beginning? I know theres 10 servers, one heavenly domain... okay I know quite a lot but I'd like to know more. I'd like to be able to create my own avatar in my head and know exactly how to join to create a guild, what's the level cap is, now the weapons the builds work... All in all, they did a terrible job at explaining the game.

the characters were all pretty decent. The MC was a bit too composed and all knowing for my liking. Hes nearly perfect. It's a bit bland. The tooth guy is disgustingly annoying.

I shouldve written this after I watched episode 8. Wei Chen, the former captain is most definitely my favorite character.

The Dub: I dunno, it felt off. Maybe it's just me but when I game, I dont sound so cutesy. I was fine with most of them but that guy with the weird tooth really rubbed me the wrong way. His voice sounded fake, his character looked fake, his personality was trash... I uh, hope he gets less screen time. Everyone else was okay.

Generally: As I said, I dont know ANYTHING. Which are the strongest teams? Why is Ye Xiu so good? How does the game work? Do they have a base? There're so many questions that can only be answered by the wiki when I want the story itself to answer them.

Conclusion: Basically, it's alright. It's far too slow though. Felt like they could easily make things slightly less detailed and use that extra time to make more episodes. They put too much work into the art aspect.
