In Kenya, job groups are classified depending on the employee’s certification, skills, and level of education. Each job group comes with its salary and allowance set and reviewed by the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC). So, what is Job Group K salary and allowances in Kenya?

Job security is one of the main reasons many people seek to secure jobs with the Kenyan government. Such employees are classified according to their job groups, which depend on various factors. As a result, there are several job groups, each with its unique pay bracket.

Job group K salary and allowances in Kenya

Different government employees fall under different job groups. Job Group K public servants include:

  • Administrative
  • Assistants
  • Accountants

What is the salary scale for job Group K? Employees in this job group receive a basic monthly salary of Ksh. 38, 270. Job group k salary in county government jobs is the same as the amount issued by the national government through the Public Service Commission.

Every New Year, marked by the day you were employed, the Salaries and Remuneration Commission offers a raise to public servants as long the amount remains within the job group's range.

Therefore, when a graduate is newly employed by the government, their basic salary will be Ksh. 38,270. However, another employee in the same job group with more years in service will receive a slightly higher basic salary.

Job group K allowances

Like any other employee by the Public Service Commission in Kenya, job group K individuals are entitled to the following civil servants allowances:

1. House allowance

This allowance is offered to civil servants to cover their housing expenses at the workplace. It also covers their accommodation outside their place of work. So, what is the house allowance for job group K public servants? The amount varies from one cluster to the other as follows:

Civil servants in cluster one receive a house allowance of Ksh. 16,500. This cluster comprises persons working in Nairobi. This is the highest-paid house allowance since the cost of living in Nairobi is considerably higher than in all the other regions.

Cluster two employees receive Ksh. 12,800. The allowance covers employees in the following regions:

  • Naivasha
  • Kilifi
  • Kwale
  • Lamu
  • Malindi
  • Mombasa
  • Nakuru
  • Kisumu
  • Cluster three

Cluster two employees receive Ksh. 9,600 covering the following areas:

  • Garissa
  • Nanyuki
  • Embu
  • Lodwar
  • Kakamega
  • Kisii
  • Kericho
  • Eldoret
  • Machakos
  • Nyeri

Cluster four employees receive Ksh. 7,500. Cluster four covers all the other regions not included in clusters one to three.

2. Commuter allowance

What is a commuter allowance? It is money offered to civil servants to cover their transport expenses to and from work and travel expenses when running errands. The amount ranges from Ksh. 3,000 to Ksh. 25,000, depending on the job group.

3. Hardship allowance

Individuals working in difficult environments, such as rural and remote areas, are given the allowance. Initially, it was a certain percentage of the basic salary, but later, it was revised to a flat rate of Ksh. 10,900 for job group K employees throughout the country.

4. Other allowances

Apart from house, hardship, and commuter allowances, public servants are entitled to the following additional allowances:

  • Risk allowance - The allowance is offered to employees exposed to risky working environments during their services.
  • Transfer allowance - This allowance is given to employees transferring from one place to another to facilitate their movement and settling in.
